Last night at The Box
I was at The Box on Chrystie Street for The Wooster Group benefit party. Guestlist!
Click HERE for the Gawker play-by-play.
And I was a lizzle drizzle.

Homesickness
Today I really missed my family and the whole state of California. It must be because I’m moving out of my apartment and will be a gyspy bohemian rover for the next 8-12 months.
I have no furniture, no valuables, no assets, and hardly any savings. I DO have lots of of clothes on my back and plenty of reading material.
When I lived in London I would only get homesick when I returned from a 3 or 4 day holiday in Europe…..it was like coming ‘home’ without really coming home. Mind you, this was also around the time when my parents were selling my childhood home and I was several thousand miles away. I still haven’t entirely forgiven them for that.

Birdie
I think I can trace my feminist roots back to a book I read in 5th grade:
I identified with the witty and irreverant protagonist who resisted embroidery and resented proposals of arranged marrage.
After reading it I can recall emulating the first person diary narrative in a spiral bound school notebook. I wrote my own daily accounts as if I were in Birdie’s culture and time period (medieval 1290) but I quickly grew frustrated with anachronisms.
“I must forego my breakfast of raisin toast, lest I miss yon school bus and be tardy for biology lesson”.

Red balloon
I made friends with a red balloon yesterday. It followed me out of the bank and bobbed along next to me as I hustled in the rain. I took it to a dinner party as my date and it was ever so polite and patient. But then someone else made friends with it and took it home. I felt lonely without it. Maybe I’ll ask Leah’s advice about this.

I’ve worn the same pair of cowboy boots for almost two months. They have wood heels and a nice tan leather that has been softly worn down while my feet have been slightly toughened up. Day in, day out, I’ve worn them. But today was the day they were noticed.
Truth be told, its misplaced attention. I feel like I’ve been using the word ‘exponential’ too frequently lately, but I really believe that women get ‘exponential’ amounts of more sexual attention/harrassment as soon as the weather warms up. Granted, that is when the sundress debust, but I severely oppose the notion that men are ENTITLED to vocalize their comments and petty flattery about how a woman’s body looks in the clothes she deems appropriate to wear that day or occasion.
And what happens when a woman is confrontational to this offensive behavior? It either encourages or enrages. I encountered both today. I was called a ‘f#%ing c*nt’ and a “sexy mama’ within twenty paces. Plus my skirt flew up again. Blast those subway winds.

Special delivery
Last friday afternoon a $70 bouquet of pink roses, mauve orchids, and purple tulips were delivered to my work desk.
“Oooh! Is it your birthday?”
“Are these from you boyfriend?”
“What’s the occcasion?”
My co-workers were all slightly stunned when I replied that the flowers weren’t from a loved one or signficant other….rather, they were graciously sent to me by a very happy customer in Michigan.
“What did you do?!”
I guess I just did my job. And was pleasant to speak to on the phone. The specifics of the matter are quite silly. He wanted the orchestrations to the Vanessa Williams version of the musical ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’ (instead of the Cheeta Rivera version). I made it happen. I hardly expected to get flowers the very next day! I love them. I tend to forget how thoughtful gesture it is to give flowers…especially all the way from Michigan.
They sit on my desk, for all to see, but mostly by me.
Thank you Harris, whoever you are.

Why not talk about the weather?
There are exponential amounts of people outside. They’re dizzy from the vitamin D exposure, walking around with their faces turned up to that omni-lumescent globe that hasn’t been very omni lately. They’re giddy from the good weather.
They say spring is just a blip on the New York weather alamanac. A mere few days of blissfully mild tempatures before the heat sets in…bam! its summer. But I love summer. Love love love the lingering hours, the leisure afternoons that turn into leisure evenings and then into leisure nighttimes. Santa Cruz summers were glorious. That beautiful hillside campus in the woods was populated by a few shakespeareans, a few raccoons, and a few thousand audience members.
Soon I’ll be on another college campus, performing for more than a few thousand people everyday, but it will be HOT. Hot hot hot. Texas hot. Barb-b-q hot. Bible belt hot. Ooooh-weee.
