Airplane food
January 3, 2007
In the rush of air travel, I seldom have time to eat a decent meal, pack snacks, or even set aside extra bucks for a bagel at the airport.
And then hunger starts to claw out my insides mid-flight.
Airlines have made cutbacks over the past few years and gone are the days of hot-water warmed, aluminum wrapped, in-flight lunches. I miss them.
It makes me wonder why we all used to complain about the quality airplane food. Granted, these trays were far from gourmet, but on the whole, wasn’t the dining experience grand?
Remember when everyone peered over their foam seats as two attendants in blue wheeled that auromatic diner cart down the aisle? Remember the oddity of holding a plastic knife and fork at 37,000 feet? The concentration it required to put a frigid pat of butter on a cellophaned roll? The comfort of a miniature complete meal, completely compartmentalized….just like you, sitting in the widow seat of 35H?
Now peanuts cost $3 and I drink a can of tomato juice because it is kind of like soup….and soup is kind of like a meal….and who doesn’t deserve a nice meal? Especially when they had to rush away on an empty stomach from a nice family and a full fridge of fresh food to catch the flight.
On the other hand, read this article for some alarming information about the behavior of your intestines at 30,000 ft
